Tonsil and Adenoid Operations

Tonsils and adenoid vegetation are lymphoid tissues. Tonsils are encapsulated structures located on both sides of our throat that can be directly seen from the mouth. Adenoid vegetation, on the other hand, is located in the anatomical space behind the nose called the nasopharynx and can be indirectly examined even though it cannot be directly seen.

The effects of tonsils and adenoid vegetation on the immune system are particularly important in childhood, but their importance decreases with age. In addition, there are other structures responsible for the body's defense system besides tonsils and adenoid vegetation, so children who undergo tonsil and adenoid surgery do not experience problems related to the immune system.

Tonsil and adenoid surgery is one of the most common operations performed in children, and tonsil surgery is also performed in adults. Chronic recurrent infections, advanced growth of these two organs causing respiratory problems, especially the enlargement of adenoid vegetation leading to disruption of middle ear ventilation, are some of the reasons that require surgery.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes between 30-60 minutes. If there is fluid accumulation in the middle ear due to adenoid vegetation and if the collapse of the eardrum is at a level that requires intervention, ear tube application can also be performed in the same session.
